Near the end of its announcement, the Redmond-based company casually revealed that it is testing Windows 10 with power users of Xiaomis flagship Mi 4Android smartphone. The initiative, which Xiaomi stressedis not a partnership but merely assistance with the trial, is an interesting one because itagain shows Microsofts new platform agnostic approach.
Neither Microsoft nor Xiaomi provided specific details of the Windows 10 software being trialled, but TechCrunch understands from sourcesthat it effectively overrides Android, turning the Xiaomi phone into a Windows 10device complete withMicrosoft services. Which the company hopes will dazzle Android owners into making the switch.
Thats to say that the software doesnt offera dual boot option, which Microsoft has pushed in the past in India. The news could be taken in a cynical way in the where whats good for the users is often convenient because its good for the business too but Xiaomi really has cultivated a sizable and trusted community, so were inclined to believe its rhetoric on this occasion.

Microsoft is using the code base from its Acompli acquisition to deliver new Outlook apps for iOS and Android.

Just a month after acquiring Acompli, Microsoft is turning that code into new Outlook for iOS and Outlook for Android apps.
On January 29, Microsoft will begin making available Outlook for iOS and a preview of Outlook for Android. These new Outlook apps will work with Office 365, Exchange, , Yahoo Mail, Gmail and other e-mail services.
Microsoft plans to replace the Outlook Web Apps for iOS and Android, as well as the app for Android with these new Outlook apps. That wont happen overnight; the Outlook Web Apps and app will remain in the respective app stores for several months. But Microsoft plans to sunset Outlook Web Apps and the app for iOS and Android by summer, officials said.
San Francisco-based email app vendor Acompli - - headed by former execs from Zimbra and VMware - - launched an iOS version of the companys email app in April 2014, and an Android version in September 2014. The mobile Acompli applications featured an integrated calendar, as well as Exchange and Gmail integration.
The Outlook for Android preview app is available immediately from the Google Play store, and the Outlook for iOS app will begin rolling out into the Apple app store starting on January 29.
Microsoft showed off last week new Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar apps that will be coming with Windows 10 that will share some of the look and feel with these two new versions of Outlook.
Microsoft also announced today that it is removing the preview tag from its Office for Android apps. Starting today, Word, Excel and PowerPoint for ARM-based Android tablets are available as free downloads from the Google Play store. OneNote for Android is already available there. Support for Intel-based Android tablets with these Office apps will be coming within a quarter, officials said.
A basic, consumer-focused version Office for Android tablets will be available for free ; a version with more business-focused features will require an Office 365 subscription - - just like Office for iPad does. Users will be able to view, create and edit content in the Office for Android tablet apps without a subscription, but not access more advanced editing/creation features or take advantage of unlimited OneDrive storage without one.
Microsoft also is redoing the Office Mobile on Android phones release so that it looks and feels more like the Office on Android tablet one. Specifically, Microsoft will be breaking up the Office Mobile hub into separate Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps, Microsoft officials said, just as they have done on the iPhone as of last year.
Microsoft will have more to say about the new Office Mobile on Android apps later this year, officials said.
Microsoft officials said there were 250, 000 downloads of the preview versions of the Office for Android apps. There also have been 80 million downloads of Office on iPad and Office on iPhone apps combined as of this week, according to Microsoft.

Following a closed preview period from November, Microsoft Office for Android tablets is now available for free to everybody in the Play Store. Apps for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are all good to go on devices between 7 inches and 10.1 inches, though Microsoft is still actively soliciting feedback to improve the experience.
Android phone versions of the Microsoft Office suite have been free since the spring, following an ill-fated requirement for an Office 365 subscription to do anything useful. The new apps are pretty good, and no doubt helpful to anybody operating in a document-heavy workplace.

What does Open Preview mean? Is this not finished product?
Im really happy to get this on Android, but I dont want a buggy beta, Im wondering if I should wait.
Definitely not finished product one might argue that they never will be that, but I found the closed preview versions to be good enough for daily use - better quality than some other apps that claim to be final. Unless you have some sort of phobia about encountering the occasional bug theres no reason to wait.
I was in the closed beta, and none of the office apps worked on Lollipop I had to keep my Nexus devices on KitKat to use them. Has this changed?
Its Official - The Preview Apps are available on Android Lollipop as well now!
No longer blocked on the Play Store, though these apps are not yet optimized for this OS version. These apps work best on ARM based devices, with at least 1 GB RAM and running Kitkat 4.4.
Runs just fine on my Nexus 7 with LP 5.0.2, and have been so for the last weeksince I switched to LP.
Thats all well and dandy, but it didnt work on LP at the closed beta launch.
These still dont work with intel based devices, which has more irony than I can unpack.

The amount of disappoint when I tried to install on my Lenovo TAB S8 was unbearable: They do say in the G community that its being worked on.
I recently purchased a Lenovo S8, with a free 1 year subscription to MS Office 365. It will not load, error message says, incompatible with your frustrating.
So the announcement says it will work on Lollipop, but it wont install on my Shield I side loaded the app from my phone and have been using it, but it would be nice to use an official version.
Works now but wont print protected documents. WPS office is better.
The tablet pictured at top is a 2013 Nexus 7 running Android Kit Kit.
Last night, I installed the preview apps on my 2013 Nexus 7 running Android Lollipop. It works, however, when opened the apps a message pop-up that the apps are not optimized for Lollipop. Also, video tutorials would not play.
These apps still are not compatible with my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.
Thats weird. I wonder why thats the case. I was able to install and use all of them with my Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1.

I guess im just lucky then. I really like these apps btw. Much better than the mobile version that has been available for a while now. Its like a real MS Office suite. Throw a bluetooth keyboard and mouse in and youre got a nice little school/work laptop.
Works on my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. I think it works really well, like you said, like having office on my windows desktop/laptop. Stock/Not Rooted.
It does work on the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 but you need an Office 365 account to be able to edit and save. We hope that Microsoft will allow the slightly larger tablets to use it for free or perhaps just a one off payment for those of us that have bought the standalone product of Office 2013.

It is a crippled preview because you cant edit unless you have an Office 365 subscription. I will stick with WPS OfficeKingsoft Office.

Кроме того, утверждается, что в пакете содержатся некоторые улучшения в соответствии с пожеланиями пользователей, тестировавших превью-версию. Согласно данным Microsoft, в программе приняли участие обладатели более 1900 различных моделей смартфонов из 83 стран мира.
Вместе с тем в приложениях сохранились некоторые дополнительные функции, которые по-прежнему требуют платной подписки на Office 365.
